Great Oaks Ranch has a growing
herd of cattle that now numbers approximately sixty. The success
in the growth of the herd and the yearly increase in the sale
of cattle can be credited to the Romagnola bulls. Research
shows that this breed of cattle is quickly growing in popularity
in the United States. Australia has been in love with this
breed that has shown its versatility in the way it has thrived
in the country's largely inhospitable climate. Factors like
easy carving, natural insect-repellant hides, and more importantly
to the struggling beef industry, leaner, healthy beef production
are just some of the factors that are making these tremendously
large growing animals very popular in herd bolstering projects.
The Romagnola is a hardy breed that when
crossbred produces offspring that carries the best characteristics
of the breed. They are easy to care for, adapt to the harshest
of conditions, and are very healthy animals. These large,
fast growing animals yield an above average amount of lean,
well-marbled beef that brings top dollar in the market place
with below average feed cost to the producing farm.
Because they grow to an average of 2,500
pounds and are known for their intelligent but aggressive
manner, they must be handled by professionals. Thomas Gonzales,
our ranch foreman, grew up in the heart of the cattle ranches
of Mexico. He gained his experience working on the large breed
and feed farms of his native land. Thomas came to Santa Ynez
some twenty years ago and has been foreman to all owners of
the ranch. His expertise has guided and grown the cattle program
at Great Oaks Ranch.
