Michael and Smart Pair of Docs took part
in the 2005 National Stock Horse Association Snaffle Bit
Futurity and Horse Show and were placed first in the
Intermediate and Amateur Non Pro Finals.
The competition is made up of three events:
cutting, reining and fence work.
Cutting requires one cow to be
separated from the herd. The rider is judged by the agility
and athleticism of the horse and their ability to walk the
horse through the herd quietly without disturbing the rest
of the cattle. Once the cow is separated, it must be controlled
and not allowed to get back to the herd. The horse may not
be guided with the reins - only the rider's legs. Click

Reining requires the rider and
horse to complete a series of required maneuvers, including
big fast circles, small slow circles, spins to the left and
right and slide to a stop. Click

Fence work requires the cow to
be controlled on the short end of the arena from side to side.
The cow is allowed to run down the long side of the arena
against the fence, the horse and rider must pass the cow,
cut it off and turn it around and make it run back down the
fence in the opposite direction. The horse and rider must
pass and cut off the cow once more. Finally, the cow is allowed
to move into the center of the arena and then moved in a small
circle in one direction and then the other. Click
